Fort Lauderdale Performing Arts Schools & Programs

Florida Atlantic University is the main place of study for students of the performing arts. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate performing arts degrees for students in the theatre and music disciplines. Although FAU has a Fort Lauderdale campus, the College of Arts and Letters is located in neighboring Boca Raton. Nova Southeastern University also offers an undergraduate theatre degree.

The Fort Lauderdale job market is projected to expand only minimally for performing artists through 2012. It is projected that 40 new jobs will become available in the performing arts and spectator sports sector through to 2012, which equates to 1.92% growth. The good news, though, is that there's no decline predicted – and these numbers refer to the creation of new full-time positions, but do not take into account attrition and subsequent employment opportunities based on existing positions.

Why Fort Lauderdale is a Great Place to Study Performing Arts

At just over 150,000 people, Fort Lauderdale is far too small support a large performing arts scene. Also, since Miami is just 25 miles to the south, there is little need to invest in ballet, opera and orchestra. That being said, Fort Lauderdale has made an effort to develop a modest performing arts season. Many of the larger American orchestras play concerts in the city when on tour. With nearly 20% of the population aged 60 or older, there is plenty of money and spare time to create a market.
